Sales and imports
We specialise in selling and importing American school buses into the UK.
'Skoolies', as they are affectionately known, are a 20th century design icon and provide a versatile blank canvas for a custom-built motorhome, unique Airbnb accommodation or head-turning mobile business.
We partner with a leading US bus supplier to source fleet-released school buses in the states, where they are professionally inspected and given a clean bill of health. We then organise delivery and roll-on, roll-off export across the pond from the Port of Baltimore, Maryland.
On arrival in the UK, we handle all import paperwork, duty and VAT, and arrange delivery of your bus on a low-loader anywhere in the country, ready for you to create your vision.
So, if you are interested in touring the country or continent in your own luxury motorhome, creating a memorable holiday accommodation, or launching an eye-catching mobile business, drop us a line on enquiries@asb-uk.co.uk.
We source all of our stock through a leading US bus supplier. This means you can rest assured each bus has been professionally inspected in the US and given a clean bill of health before being prepared for export. Being fleet vehicles, school buses are generally well maintained and regularly serviced. Further photographs and video walkarounds of all stock can be provided on request.
We remove the logistical stress of sourcing, purchasing, transporting and exporting your bus from the US, and shipping, importing, processing and delivering it in the UK.
We start with a conversation to understand your vision, and work with our supplier to create a shortlist of buses for you to choose from, with detailed photographs and video walkarounds.
Each model in our inventory has undergone a full safety check by experienced school bus technicians and comes with its own report. We aim to deliver within four weeks of purchase.
Once it's with you, we can also offer a range of additional services:
With up to 270 sq ft of usable internal floorspace, many people opt for a bespoke motorhome or Airbnb accommodation in their bus, incorporating bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and living areas.
However, the possibilities and opportunities with such a versatile, practical space are endless. Here is a shortlist of businesses we've seen operating over the years from converted buses:
Please email enquiries@asb-uk.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question
Size types vary by US state, but generally Type A buses are considered short-length wheelbase models, Type B buses are mid-length, and Type C buses full-length. Type Bs and Cs are sometimes referred to as 'dog-nosed' buses, with the engine located at the front, forward of the cab. Type D buses are also full-length, but with a flat front and engine located at the rear.
No - our prices incorporate all end-to-end costs, excluding two things:
1) Marine insurance for when the bus is at sea (some customers opt for this, some don't. It's not mandatory, though we of course recommend it). This generally costs 1.5 to 2.5 per cent of the bus value.
2) Delivery of bus from the port of entrance (usually Southampton), to your location. This cost varies depending on the length of journey. (As a reference, a journey on a low-loader of circa 400 miles - 200 miles each way - is usually around £1,200 to £1,500). Alternatively, you are of course free to arrange your own delivery once it has cleared customs.
A huge amount - we partner with a leading US school bus supplier, so the stock is vast, with dozens of buses to choose from at any given time. The inventory on our site is only a small selection of what's available.
Email us on enquiries@asb-uk.co.uk to arrange an introductory conversation, where we can find out what you're after, and send you a curated shortlist of options for you to consider.
Yes - once each bus has been released from service, it is individually checked over by our partners and their in-house team of specialist school bus technicians, who know what to look out for. Each example is given a full safety report, which will be provided.
Any buses that fail these inspections are not advertised and are scrapped. Unlike with private sellers who may not disclose hidden nasties, we only advertise buses which pass these inspections and are given a clean bill of health.
We are open, honest and transparent, and freely document every vehicle in full, so you have all details available and are able to make a fully-informed decision.
While we do not offer vehicle warranties and guarantees once they are in the UK, you can rest assured each bus has been fully inspected in the US to ensure it is safe and working as it should be, with no known faults at the time of export.
Yes - after an initial chat with you about the type of bus you're after, we work with our US partner to curate a shortlist of options for you. We'll share a comprehensive selection of photos and video walkarounds (including showing the bus running) and document anything in particular you wish to check for. All buses have been individually checked over by specialist technicians and given a full safety report for your peace of mind.
After you've selected the one for you, we take care of everything else. We organise a shipping slot (usually within two weeks), arrange transportation to the US port of departure (usually Baltimore), and export costs. Once landed (usually within two weeks, into Southampton), we cover all import fees, duty and VAT, so your bus is cleared and ready.
The bus is then free for collection, or we can organise low-loader delivery anywhere in the UK, as well as optional further services such as transportation to vehicle testing, LPG conversions, custom paintwork and full interior fitouts/conversions.
Yes - we can arrange both LPG and interior design and fitouts as optional additional services. LPG conversions typically save you to up 50% of fuel cost, and our partnered craftsmen can work with you to design and build your ultimate motorhome or holiday accommodation, with full insulation, plumbing and electrics.
Very simply - we take 50 per cent of the payment up front to secure the purchase and get the bus shipped, with the remaining 50 per cent due on delivery.
Once your bus has landed and cleared customs, we can arrange delivery on a low-loader to anywhere in the UK. This cost varies depending on your location, but as a reference, a journey on a low-loader of circa 400 miles - 200 miles each way - is usually around £1,200 to £1,500. Alternatively, you are of course free to collect or arrange your own delivery.
If you do not yet have a bus licence, and will be driving the bus for non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods, you will not need a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
Instead, provided you have an existing car licence and reach the minimum age requirement, you'll simply need to apply for your provisional Category D bus licence and pass the part 1 (theory), part 3a (off-road exercises) and part 3b (on-road driving) tests. Full details can be found on GOV.UK.
As with cars, to drive on the road in the UK, you will also need an annual MOT test and to be insured.
No - our full end-to-end service covers all costs in bringing over your skoolie, excluding marine insurance (optional, but recommended) and final UK low-loader delivery (costs vary depending on your location).
Our service means you needn't worry about having to make international payments, arranging customs clearance in the UK, nor dealing with any transport or export hassles from the US. We take care of it all, freeing you up to focus on creating your vision for your new school bus.
We'd love to hear from you!
